The Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser building at Walt Disney World has found a new purpose – office space. According to The Wrap, the old home of Disney’s most ambitious immersive experience will soon serve as office space for Walt Disney Imagineering as they work on projects around Disney World.
The Wrap’s report says that Walt Disney Imagineering will use the building as a hub as they work on projects at Magic Kingdom (Cars area), Disney’s Hollywood Studios (Monsters, Inc land), and more.
We’ve analyzed the Galactic Starcruiser extensively ever since it closed its doors in September 2023. The reasons why the Galactic Starcruiser failed are many, and the project seemed doomed from its inception. Despite its failures, the Galactic Starcruiser did attract a passionate, albeit small, following.
Disney has previously said that “something will happen” with the Galactic Starcruiser building. Many believed Disney was testing out the possibility of a shortened experience, or even a dinner show, but the logistics of the building’s relatively isolated location is a major problem. It’s possible Disney will try to incorporate some of those ideas directly into the theme parks (a Star Wars dinner show makes a lot of sense in Hollywood Studios) to get around the transportation issue.
This development pours a lot of cold water on Disney fans hoping that some sort of immersive experience would return to the Galactic Starcruiser. Unfortunately, Disney might be taking away the wrong lessons from this failed experiment, and is unlikely to take any big risks with its offerings in the near future.
