Pre-production for season 3 of The Mandalorian is already underway

Rejoice, fans of The Mandalorian! Disney isn’t wasting any time moving forward with a third season of the hit Star Wars series. The news, as reported from Variety, outlines that writing and creative concepts are already being developed for season three of the Disney+ show.

The news that work is already underway for season three comes just a handful of weeks after production wrapped on season two in March 2020. With the second season currently scheduled to release in October 2020, it may be a bit surprising to hear Disney already has the wheels turning for the third installment before gauging how season two is received by viewers.

Variety’s source explained why work on season three of The Mandalorian was getting started so early.

Another source with knowledge of the situation confirmed that the production design department began working on season 3 on April 20, pointing to the fact the department requires “such a huge lead time” to explain why “the gears have started grinding really early on.”

It sounds like Disney realizes they can’t afford to have significant gaps in their content schedule, particularly with their tent-pole programming. The drought of high-profile new content has been one of the chief complaints with Disney+ following its launch in late 2019. Beginning work on season three of The Mandalorian well before season two even releases will hopefully cut down on the gap between seasons.
