Disney has announced that Fantasmic! will officially reopen at Disneyland on May 24, 2024. The show has been closed ever since the Maleficent dragon caught fire in spectacular fashion back in April 2023.
When the show returns, it unfortunately won’t include a rebuilt a Maleficent dragon figure. Scott Gustin reports that the updated show will feature new special effects and a “thrilling new battle scene between Sorcerer Mickey and Maleficent” that will take the place of the dragon.
Fantasmic! is one of those iconic Disney parks shows that Disneyland does spectacularly well. Many would agree Disneyland’s version is superior to Walt Disney World’s show, and the old Maleficent dragon figure was a big reason why. Disneyland has routinely updated Fantasmic! to keep it fresh, and this upcoming change is just the latest evolution.
As sad as it is that the Maleficent dragon won’t return, we have confidence that Disneyland’s planned changes will resonate with guests and continue to make Fantasmic! a must-see experience.
