In April 2018, Disney announced that guests would be able to unlock their door at the Wilderness Lodge resort through their phone. If the test went well, the service would then be added to additional Disney World resorts.
It appears the early tests have gone well, as Disney has now rolled out the service to a large number of their resorts. With Saratoga Springs and Old Key West being the most recent additions, here’s the full list as of August 2018, as seen on WDWNT.com.

Here’s Disney’s video announcing the feature:
Thanks to Magic Bands, this seems like an unnecessary, yet convenient addition. It’s great to have another option to get into your room should you forget your Magic Band, but it also raises its own issues. How many people will rely on their phone only to have their battery die? Is making this feature available opening the door (bad pun) to new security risks?
Based on how things are progressing, all Disney World resorts should be offering the ability to unlock room doors with a phone in the very near future.
