What’s going to happen to the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser building at Walt Disney World? Disney announced the innovative two-night experience would be closing permanently September 30, 2023. The sudden closure leaves a decent-size building sitting vacant just outside of Disney’s Hollywood Studios without any clear plans.
According to an interview by The Points Guy with Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Parks, Disney has something planned for the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser space that they’re not ready to reveal quite yet.
D’Amaro’s comments via The Points Guy:
“No hints yet,” D’Amaro says, smiling, “but something will happen.”
He also commented on Disney trying something new that ultimately failed.
“Raise the bar. Try things that the guests aren’t even asking for because they don’t know to ask for that. I know not everything’s going to work. What did work, though, is we took creativity and storytelling to a completely new level, to a level that had never existed before. … It didn’t work commercially. And so, when we realized that, you just make a call and move on.”
D’Amaro’s comments don’t add a ton of clarity to the Galactic Starcruiser discussion. Saying something will happen could mean a new experience in the same space, or it could mean a total demo with something new built in the future. The Disney community is sure to speculate.
We’ve always applauded Disney for trying new things even if we aren’t big believers in the concept. See EPCOT’s Harmonious nighttime spectacular. But, the Galactic Starcruiser seemed doomed from the beginning with a premium price that eliminated a large percentage of potential guests.
Hopefully whatever Disney tries next in this space has better results.
