You may have seen some reports recently suggesting Disney is planning to change the name of Walt Disney World. The rumors said Disney would drop the “Walt” and refer to their Florida vacation destination simply as Disney World.
The rumor grew legs despite no real evidence. That led to the always-reliable reporter Scott Gustin issuing the statement below.
I’m seeing way too many people sharing this ridiculous story. Just to confirm:
1. Walt Disney World is *not* changing its name to Disneyworld.
2. WDW is not trying to disassociate from Walt. I can’t believe I have to say that – yet here we are. pic.twitter.com/kqV9hm06va

Why did this rumor suddenly gain so much traction?
Some suggested Disney wants to distance itself from Walt Disney due to “accusations”, but that angle never made much sense. Others suggested Disney wanted to simplify the “Walt Disney World” name down to two words in a branding move, which at least is more logical.
This specific rumor is one of those lose-lose concepts that some basic critical thinking should have dismissed. Changing the name would have ticked off Disney fans and cost Disney money (all the signs that would have to change!) for no real benefit. All of Disney’s decisions, even recent unpopular decisions, have a clear answer when you stop to think who benefits. And, if we’re being honest, Disney likely won’t pursue too many things without a clear financial gain.
You can throw this rumor on the pile of other nonsensical rumors, right up there with the Haunted Mansion becoming a Coco ride and the even crazier idea that Disney would move to Texas.
