Things are starting to get serious for the refurbishment of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Magic Kingdom. A large crane has been erected just behind the coaster ahead of its lengthy closure that’s set to begin on January 6, 2025.
Friend of the site DC Baker captured a great look at the crane looming over Big Thunder Mountain.
The refurbishment, which is currently scheduled to last until sometime in 2026, will cover just about every aspect of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. The coaster is expected to receive a full track replacement, and new effects are expected to be added to the ride’s third lift hill.
In addition to the crane, guests will likely see scaffolding go up around portions of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad during the refurbishment. The ride’s landscaping and overall appearance should receive a refresh during the extended closure.
Guests visiting Magic Kingdom in 2025 should be aware that Big Thunder Mountain’s closure will have an impact on Lightning Lane availability and wait times around the park.
