Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at the Magic Kingdom will close for a relatively brief refurbishment in May 2020. The popular attraction will be closed May 4, 2020 through May 21, 2020 according to Disney’s website. Assuming everything goes according to plan, it’s expected to reopen May 22, 2020.
This appears to be a routine refurbishment period where general maintenance will be performed on the attraction. Unfortunately, barring a major surprise, that means there probably won’t be any new effects added to the Magic Kingdom’s Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at this time.
Other iterations of the ride have had effects added to the third lift hill that give off the illusion that the tunnel is exploding and starting to collapse. The feature was added to Disneyland’s Big Thunder Mountain Railroad during a lengthy closure several years ago.
Wouldn’t the scene below be a great addition to the Magic Kingdom’s ride?
For now, it looks like Magic Kingdom guests will have to continue waiting for new effects to be added to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
