Should the Virtual Queue End for Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind?

Updated:

Low crowds have arrived at Walt Disney World. The beginning of the school year has brought surprisingly-low attendance, dropping wait times around Walt Disney World’s theme parks. Disney’s newest attraction, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, is experiencing unprecedented availability with its virtual queue and Lightning Lane.

Is it time for Cosmic Rewind’s virtual queue to end? Is it time for a standby line to open?

Currently, the virtual queue for Cosmic Rewind has two drops each day for regular guests – 7am and 1pm. The 7am drop, which used to fill up instantly, has been lasting for over an hour. The second drop at 1pm has remained open for several hours.

Meanwhile, the Lightning Lane for Cosmic Rewind has seen a ton of availability. Guests have been able to buy a Lightning Lane in the afternoon with a return time within the next five minutes. This has led to bizarre scenes where the queue for Cosmic Rewind has been almost empty.

Cosmic Rewind is ripe for a standby line during the relatively few slow periods at Walt Disney World. The lone issue is the actual queue size for the attraction, which is remarkably small for the space.

The indoor queue can hold maybe 45 minutes worth of guests, and that’s being generous. We’ve previously seen the queue spill outside and go through makeshift switchbacks to the side of the building. This was a nightmare during the hot summer months, but it could be a feasible solution during Fall and Winter. Disney would have enough time to address the shade issue – if they wanted to – before the most brutal Florida heat returns next year.

It’s also worth noting that Cosmic Rewind has enjoyed steady reliability and capacity. Those are big factors when deciding to turn off the virtual queue. Cosmic Rewind is arguably a much better candidate for a standby line than other big rides, such as Rise of the Resistance, that has major reliability issues.

Disney might be hesitant to remove the virtual queue for Cosmic Rewind with the busy holiday season looming. However, we’d like to see the standby line opened as it’s painful watching this great attraction sit with an empty queue.
